Sour Cream and Horseradish

I know sour cream and horseradish go well together, especially on a cold thin-sliced lomo fino sandwich. Sorry- I got a bit carried away! This post is about the great friends we have made in Salinas and elsewhere because of this blog.  Right after I issued the statement that I could not find sour cream here I was told in a very gentle way that “that is not so”.  Most of what we found in Panama was labeled in English because the Panamanians did not use it and it was on the shelves for the Expats. But here most of these items are listed in Spanish and, as I have told you before, my Spanish is basic — I mean very basic. Patricia was the first to tell me about this item in the green container that looked like cream cheese – I asked her to take a picture of the container but she did not have any in her fridge at the time.  Then Nancy and Chuck on a shopping excursion to Super Maxi found a container, remembered my post and actually delivered it into my eager hands.

It is called Crema de Leche and, in very small letters, Agria, which means sour.  I cannot thank Pat enough for her advice and Nancy and Chuck for this gift…

Last evening we spent with Monica and John.  They came bearing gifts – yes you know exactly where I am going with this.  It was a jar of English Horseradish Sauce. John thinks that if I go to Super Maxi and speak to the manager he will stock this item for me. They found this in an out-of-town market.

Now you understand the title Sour Cream and Horseradish!!

    • Hi Janet, I think you are talking about Heavy Cream — leche?? I would buy the quart sized box in Super Tia or Gran Aki for a little under $4 a box, I did not buy it in 8 oz containers. You can also get it fresh in bags in the cooler section but again I hated my refrigerator so seldom bought those little bags because my frig would not keep them cold enough…here in Clemente the tiendas do not sell cream only milk. I will be making a trip to Portoviejo soon after we move into the house in the next few weeks and I will look then…I hope I can remember to sent you a note — you know old age and all. thanks for you comment.
